American History through Artwork

Below are links to pieces of art in the U.S. Capitol building that depict major events that occurred in American History. As you look at these pieces of art what do you notice? Who is featured? Who is left out? Are these friezes biased toward a certain perspective?

- Landing of the Pilgrims

- Captain Smith and Pocahontas

- Pizarro Going to Peru

- Cortes and Montezuma at Mexican Temple

- Landing of Columbus

  • These picture were all very well made, and really showed what it was like to be in that point in time. Though it's not exacly the style of pictures that some people prefer, people should be willing to open thier minds to new ideas, and be able to see why some people may like them, which they should respect. Even if it's not the style some people prefer, it is nice of the overal idea of showing the history through the artwork. If, for example, people get confused with words-i.e. prefer numbers, but can't exactly put hisory through numbers, except for dates-it's a good visual way to portray it. To help people that think like that, it would be nice if all books had more art, to show people different ways to put history. (sorry that I'm not in your class, but this page was really neat)
