I think that it was a very good idea for the NCAA to make a rule that shows their position on Native American mascots. The NPR recordings really make you realize how bad some of the names are. There are the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savages and they imply that the savages are Native Americans. I really can't believe that a school would keep a team name that derogatory.
Also listening to the University of Illinois executive talk in the second recording makes you realize that the U of I has endless excuses why their mascots is okay. I think that it doesn't matter if the school was named after the state and not the tribe. The fact is, it is offensive to the Native Americans. That alone makes it not right no matter how many excuses you can give.
